        Lead HV Substation Design Engineer – Major UK Energy Projects

        We’re representing a leading national infrastructure group delivering some of the UK’s most complex and high-profile energy projects. Their work spans power transmission, distribution, renewables, EV infrastructure and decarbonisation, supporting the transition to a smarter, more resilient energy network.
        They’re now seeking an experienced Lead HV Substation Design Engineer to take technical ownership of key substation design projects nationwide. This is an opportunity to join a well-resourced, forward-thinking business offering genuine autonomy and flexibility within a high-performing design environment.
        The Role
        You’ll be a senior member of the Transmission Design Team, leading substation design activity from concept through to delivery across major UK clients, including National Grid, SSE, SPEN and regional DNOs. Acting as the principal technical contact, you’ll ensure all designs meet programme, cost and compliance objectives while supporting colleagues and clients with expert guidance.
        Key responsibilities include:

        • Leading the design and delivery of HV substation systems, including primary, secondary and earthing.
        • Acting as the technical authority for design standards, governance and quality assurance.
        • Supporting project, site and bid teams through all stages of design and delivery.
        • Collaborating with senior management and clients to ensure technical excellence and consistency.
        • Driving innovation and knowledge-sharing across multi-disciplinary teams.

        About You

        • Minimum five years’ experience in HV substation electrical design within the power transmission and distribution sector.
        • Strong working knowledge of National Grid specifications, British Standards and DNO/TNO design standards.
        • Experience as a CDAE on National Grid projects.
        • Degree (BEng/BSc) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or HND with relevant experience.
        • Knowledge (preview drawings as a minimum) in using 2D CAD software (ideally Autodesk products)
        • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple design projects independently.
        • Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
