Design Manager
We’re representing a major national energy infrastructure provider working across electricity networks, grid modernisation and large-scale connection projects. Their distribution and connections division delivers end-to-end solutions for DNOs and ICPs, supporting critical upgrades and new customer connections across the UK.
With significant programme growth across the East of England, we’re seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead electrical design delivery for new substations, reinforcement schemes and network upgrades from 11kV to 132kV. This is a key leadership role within an established alliance partnership, offering genuine progression and the chance to shape future network capability.
The Role
You’ll take responsibility for managing design outputs across multiple distribution projects, working closely with internal design teams, external consultants and the client. Your focus will be on safe, compliant, commercially efficient design that supports successful delivery across the whole project lifecycle.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and coordinating design activities across internal and external engineering teams
- Setting and maintaining safety, quality, commercial and operational performance targets
- Owning the commercial outcomes of design packages, including forecasting and cost control
- Monitoring progress against client milestones and internal KPIs
- Building strong working relationships with the DNO client and alliance partners
- Managing resource planning to meet fluctuating project demands
- Supporting and developing a high-performing design team
- Preparing design programmes, reports and cost estimates
About You
- Proven experience leading design or engineering teams within utilities, power distribution, DNO or ICP environments
- Strong people management and communication skills
- Chartered Engineer (or equivalent relevant experience)
- Knowledge of ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 management systems
- Solid understanding of CDM Regulations and Designer responsibilities
- Good working knowledge of 11kV–132kV electrical protection, control and substation design
- Commercially aware with confidence in budget and programme decision-making
- Experience working within alliance or joint-venture delivery models is beneficial
